Miami
Flying into Florida
I took this picture out of the window of our airplane flying to Miami. I believe this is the Gulf Coast of southern Florida just south of Fort Myers. I thought it would be good to learn some Spanish for this trip so I brought along a Spanish copy of The Hobbit (El Hobbit) and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal). I also watched a video on common Spanish phrases by Butterfly Spanish. I created a set of Quizlet flashcards based on this series.
The Ocean from the Air
The ocean from the air. I kept seeing some little puffs of white that I thought might be whales but it was probably just white caps on the waves.
The Rainbow Bridge
These windows at the Miami airport create a great rainbow effect when the sun shines through. If you are looking for ground transportation and you see this you know you are on the right track.
Metromover
The Metromover is a free transportation system that reminds me of part subway and part roller coaster. This was the view out of our hotel window in Miami, the Comfort Inn & Suites. The Metromover station was nearly right outside the door. The Metromover is a stand-up transport that is usually very busy. We had to take the Metrorail from the airport but after that, we mostly rode the Metromover.
Graffiti Building
The abandoned Vitas Healthcare building in downtown Miami has been turned into a giant graffiti project. I guess it's nice they are keeping it in one location. I think it is between SE 2nd St and SE 3rd St right by Biscayne Blvd.
Tile Building
This building had an interesting pattern creating an urban texture. I don't remember exactly where I took this picture. I know it was taken from a Metromover station.
Miami Beach
Miami Beach is located on an island. This is the west coast of the island. Note there is no beach on this side.
This is the east coast of the island. I took these pictures from the deck of our cruise ship.
Bayfront
The first night we took the Metromover to Bayfront park and walked over to the Bayside Marketplace. We ate supper at La Cañita. I had the Cuban sandwich and my wife ordered a bowl of soup. We also had two mojitos. The bill came to $90. The food was good. The atmosphere was great with live music. It seemed like they were trying to bring up the bill. The waiter didn't come around to fill my water, but he came around right away when our drinks were empty. He suggested that the soup was spicy and my wife should get some rice. She declined. The soup was not that spicy. I applaud that a 20% tip was included in the meal, so the workers were guaranteed a tip. I did not understand what the cigar box was for. Am I supposed to throw more money in there after a 20% tip? How much money do I put in the box? I am old enough to remember when tipping was 10% - 15% depending on the service.
